When I was first building websites back in 2000, I started out on Tripod, before trying envy.nu and geocities, brinkster, homesites, you name it. Alas, all of the free corporate hosts on the internets, they all blew. Until one day, a really great guy named Bain told me I had beautiful sites, but the ads sucked. The next day, he hosted me. I lived there for a year or two, until eventually he faded off and the domain expired. I went back to corporate hosts, that I hated (especially after being on a great privately-owned domain) until MagicalTux offered to host me months later. I’ve never forgotten how great those guys were to me, and swore that one day I’d do the same for someone else. That said, I figured that since I have quite a bit of webspace, and two different domains (electricangels.net and shounen-terrorist.net), I might as well start now.

A few rules

Most of these should be pretty self-explanatory. I’m offering this to be nice, and to do my part to repay the kindness people once showed me — that doesn’t mean I’m going to let myself get walked on.

1. No illegal content (aka RIAA-branded music rotation sites, etc) — I know they’re cool, but they’re also a little bit on the illegal side, and I don’t like the idea of spending the rest of my life paying off the RIAA cos someone decided to upload music I probably don’t like anyway. *g* I’ll relax those rules for two things: independent artists who want a place to put their music, and radioblogs, even though the legality of those are sketchy. The first time I get notice from Important People, though, and they’re gone.
2. Have a well-designed site. I’m not demanding perfection, but put serious effort into it — after all, you are planning on showcasing it to the world.
3. Speaking of that, I’d like to see it before saying yes or no. Either upload it to one of those previously-mentioned corp. sites, or upload it to either yousendit or megaupload and send me a download link. If you haven’t designed what you want yet, it’s okay. I just want to see what you can do.
4. You’ll need to know ftp — if you don’t already have it, I’d recommend FileZilla. It’s what I use, it’s completely free, and it’s better than any of the other ftp programs I’ve used. I’m not tech support by any means, but I can probably help you out with most things.
5. Talk to me every once in a while! =3 We have a forum here that you can use to get to know your webmaster and fellow hostees, seek help with issues you might have here, or just hang out.
6. I’m not sure about hatelistings, but I’ll host them — I won’t have sites with race superiority themes (that includes the Japanese, for all you japan-is-all-that’s-good otaku freaks out there) or anything like that. If you want to run a yaoi/yuri fanfiction site, okay, but no videos of you and your boyfriend/girlfriend getting down and dirty on the kitchen table.
7. IT’S NOT MY FAULT. So please don’t sue me kthnx. Make sure and back up your sites/databases/etc.
8. Make sure your scripts are secure and updated. If security gets breached and we all get OMGHAXXED, we all lose.

If you break my rules, I will send you an email and tell you exactly why. After that, you have one week to fix the problem before I delete you. My decisions are final; you don’t like it, you’re free to go elsewhere.
